Bideford 2017

The first weekend of March saw sixteen members of the branch off to Bideford for the Number Four Area Annual Reunion. We all arrived in good time on Friday Afternoon, despite one couple breaking out of the convoy to circumnavigate Cornwall before finally plucking up courage to cross the border.

The absence of the usual table plan caused much confusion, after removing all our belongings we finally settled on our two tables in the ‘naughty corner’. The Branch did well in the evenings ‘Spirit Raffle’ gaining 4 prizes, though these weren’t given out until the following morning in case the elderly alcoholics consumed them at the table. It was then time to show off our physical agility on the dance floor, although in some cases the mind was more willing than the body.

After breakfast on Saturday morning it was time for the Quiz, unlike branches that enter giant teams we split into 3 groups as usual, and once again judged it to perfection coming second, good enough to prove we can do it but not needing to set next years Quizą½€ We followed this with a mass exodus to Atlantic Village for a browse around and lunch and then it was time to start scrubbing and sprucing for the evening’s formal dinner.

This years Guest of Honour was the Chaplain of the Fleet who has had quite an interesting and varied career. After the standard formalities and toasts we were entertained by comedian and singer Paul Anthony, and followed this with much frivolity around the table and physical exercise on the dance floor. The raffle took the same course as previous years – we provide the best prize but cannot get our tickets to pop out of the drum – Roger did come away with some table linen.

After much discussion concerning Sunday morning’s inclement weather we decided to forgo the normal hot chocolate and stroll around Bideford, instead we spent the time preparing for the Sod’s Opera. There were several good acts this year; Ted started the proceedings with a few comical poems – only Arsene Wenger could describe the judge’s decision on that one. The Branch’s ‘Lost Youth Marching Team’ went down very well and their performance was rewarded with the Tremlett Cup for best group effort.

Then came lunch with more food and compulsory alcohol.

With barely time to catch your breath it was soon time to prepare for the evening – more food, more alcohol and more frivolity. It was noticeable that the physical gyrations on the dance floor were becoming more subdued as the weekend began to take its toll.

Monday morning – somewhat jaded, the last round of force-feeding before our departure. Time to say our goodbyes and wend our way home for a well earned rest.

An excellent weekend packed with fun, feasting and merriment – the debauchery was only in the mind of the men.

A special thank you to Terry for ensuring that each event and costume change was suitably recorded for when it becomes time to reminisce.

If you haven’t been for a while (or never) why not consider giving it a go next year, enjoyment is compulsory and provided free by each other – the rest we let everyone else take care of.

Liskeard RNA and RBL Horse race Night 18 June

Just a quick reminder; the Branch and the RBL are co-hosting a Horse race night at the RBL on Saturday 18 June. Proceeds will go toward the upkeep of the defibrillator sited outside the club.

There will be 8 races. The first seven races will be sponsored and there will be an opportunity to buy a horse in any race. Betting will take place where winnings are possible. An auction will be held for the last race for both sponsorship and for the sale of horses. A race programme will be provided and a raffle will be held.

The first race will start at 2030 so you are asked to be place by 2000 at the latest.

Please give us your support. They usually turn out to be fun evenings. Bring your friends, the more the merrier.
